Nobody cooperates in corporate…

I am 23 and have been a part of the big, bad corporate world since my teenage days. My first tryst with the big, bad corporate world was when I was 18 years old. I used to do my summer internship then. Whatever I earned as a stipend during those two months would be my pocket money for the rest of the year. My parents were not too impressed about this, but then they realized that kids learn certain things only when they are exposed to the big, bad world.

Agree or disagree, according to me no management book or MBA teaches you the following lessons:

1. He who knows to sweet talk has a bright future

2. No matter how hard you work; the frequency at which you show your face to the management decides your vertical growth in the organization’s hierarchy

3. No matter how trustworthy your female/male colleague is, don’t bitch about anyone in the office. You never know kab kaun party badlega.

4. Be selfish, don’t show the management that you can give your blood and sweat for the company. If your boss tells you to work for extra time, ensure that you get benefits like drop till home, comp off, free dinner etc etc.

5. Don’t ever allow the company to take you for granted because, today the company which is treating you so well will not think twice before kicking you out tomorrow.

6. Be diplomatic even if it’s not in your blood. I have a sharp tongue but I talk to my colleagues in a very politically correct manner. I sound like an 80 year old then :)

7. Don’t be too happy if your company arranges events such as DJ party, quarterly parties and blah, blah…fine they act as a good stress buster but tell me can there be a better stress buster than getting time to spend with your family?

I remember learning about corporate ethics and management principles during my grad days. Today I understand it was all shudh bakwaas. Ethics and principles are just on paper, they are all utopian concepts. They do not exist at all. Today I am left disillusioned. I have been witnessing lot of politics, lot of bitching, and lot of insecurity since the age of 18. I am a mute spectator and I hate it. I am trying to run away from this corporate duniya, but the sight of Gandhi notes keeps bringing me back to the Air Conditioned Prison. My parents say that I have become very hard hearted, well can’t help it, the zalim duniya has made me like this. I have become big time kamini and I do feel guilty sometimes, but then honestly I can't help it...I have to be that way.

Oh from kamini I am reminded of this song from the movie kaminey, I am leaving you with this song. It has become my current fav song now.

For people who have not yet joined the corporate world:

You need not get worried or disillusioned; I don’t think all companies are that bad.

  3. Some post it was!!!

Kya khunnas hai yaar!!And so much obvious facts! Corporate teaches you the hard way out.. i've seen shit happen all around maself too. Bus itna hai ki seeing all this crap you tune yourself in such a way that ultimately you'd never have to suffer. Bithing, Backstabbing and flattery are the underlying principles of corporate!!

    Sad but true.!

P.S : SO u've started the "dhajjiya udafying" sessions on various occupations !!!

    Awesome!! keep writing

    cheers
    rammy

  4. I second each word you wrote.

Ethics is just a jargon. I am learning it the hard way too.

Bold post :-) Hope your boss doesn't read this :-P

  5. Honest post!

"I am trying to run away from this corporate duniya, but the sight of Gandhi notes keeps bringing me back to the Air Conditioned Prison" said it all.

    Story of all our lives.

  6. whoaaa...some great words of gyaan from d great-grand-granny, aka G3, of the corporate wold! ;)

well-written n i can't but agree with whatever u said...have seen every single one of these from close quarters...but then i guess these things would exist everywhere...so no sweats over that :)

    n happy frndship day 2 u too :D

  7. Bottom line is- Tension gheo nakos ( correct ahes kaay maza Marathi) ? . Such is life, don't let it get to your head and don't lose sleep over it. I'm sure once you learn the subtle techniques of lording over corporate evils ( which you will once you get a bit older and experienced like me) , then dekhna you'll simply love corporate life for the thrill it gives u. But ek baat hai, I'd choose corporate politics anyday over the Govt offices waala politics.

By the way, read the book by Scott Adams called 'Dilbert Principle'. Eye-opener!

  8. well well well.. I have learnt so many things from this post.. i am relatively new to work/job thingy...!
but I will always keep these things in mind!

    thanks! :)

  9. Excellent post. They don’t teach these things in the grad school. People who sweet talk and grin f the management get ahead.

  10. Aare yaar..i know wat u mean..but like u rightly said not all cos are the same..and was lucky to wrk for a boss who actually cared for me..those 2 yrs keep reminding me that a good corporate world can exist too :)

  11. Aha excellent post, and you are so so right about 'Ethics and principles are just on paper, they are all utopian concepts.' I got my first job with large corporation too, it was nice, but once I matured I realized how every one used me, lol, so I left after 5 years of service. The thing with me was that I was young and a woman. One of the business managers told me that because I am young and woman, I will be eaten alive - this is when I decided to leave, I didn't wanted to be eaten. After all if you ever quit the air conditioner place, lol, then beware of small business - some business owners can be the biggest ass... too - so I left the company that time too. And now I own my own business that makes very little money, I am happy, and most of all enjoying being a parent for a while...

Excellent post, and cool blog you have. Sorry for long comment...

    Anna :)

  13. AS...i am glad you liked this, i wish to write a book on how an individual should behave in corporates :P

arv, even i learnt all this in a hard manner :) but i guess these experiences have made us smarter

rammy it's in my blood i guess to dhajjia udao everything...all we can do is to maintain a diplomatic stand on everything :)

insignia fortunately my boss is a nice man and i am waiting for him to come back from his native town so that I can show him this post and tell him how stupid i feel here :)

thanks layman...i know it's the shame sorry same story almost everywhere

be...i don't know if i can ever get to see an ideal corporate house :)

parikshith, tu toh mere bhai jaise bol raha hain...but yes you are right. probably i have not yet learnt the tricks of the trade. My 'calling spade a spade' nature is giving me a huge trouble :(, need to something about it.
i will surely read the dilbert principle soon, though i do read dilbert comic strips regularly :)
P.S: tu toh bada accha bol leta hain marathi.

abhinav, dheere dheere tu sab seekh jayega don't worry :)

SG true, that's why i decided to learn the corporate ways of life first and then enroll into a b school so that when i complete my studies and enter the corporate world, i will be mentally prepared for everything.

shanu it's good that your experience in corporate has been good...my boss is a nice man too (and no i am not saying this because he reads my blogs) but then i often find lot of wrong doings and unfair dealings occurring around me and this puts me off completely. i know business can't be 100% ethical but there needs to be some amount of corporate responsibility followed.

anna, thanks for visiting my blog, glass ceiling effect is one more thing i hate. I am glad that u took the decision to work independently. Peace of mind is any day preferable. All the best for your future ventures and for your life!

gayathri, we share the same name...don't worry as shanu said we never know your boss and company could be very good...just pray that you have a rocking time in the corporate field :) all the best! and thanks for visiting my blog

  14. Nice thoughts....having learned all that myself in just 8 months in Corporate World. But these things do not end here. They are everywhere big or small..taking there own shades in every situations.

I'd accidentally stumbled upon your blog. But I think I gonna like it. :)

  15. Someone told me "If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss."

You are on the learning curve. Absorb as much as you can. And dont let corporate life rule your personal life. Not worth it. At the end of the day you need family and your loved ones to keep you sane. So just dont be bothered about other stuff. Also, always remember that an idiot cannot push you around.

  16. Wow..
Valid points. And I so agree with the 7th one.
You sure look flustered by the incident whatever it was.
I know it sounds idealistic, but one point I have onserved is : You can never keep a good man (or a woman) down for long.

    ReplyDelete
  17. thanks sam, i am trying to learn the corporate ways of life since a few months...i don't quite like it but then yes i am trying to get used to it. I don't carry work or tension to home thankfully...

brown phantom...thanks for that idealistic advice...you are right one can't keep a good man or woman down for a long time...but the duration of downturn does try your patience very badly...you are right the incident has really instilled lot of anger within me...but i guess this is an universal phenomenon and I will have to learn to take it in my stride as time passes

  18. hahaaa good bits of advice, and I've to agree that each one bit is right.

Those who show-off more, climb the ladder quick. Ohhh, welcome to the real world, if anyone disagrees to those red-fonted sentences!

  19. 1) At my work nobody speaks sweet and i speak the hard way :)

2)I don't want to show my face to the management as I am too lucky these days and I don't want to risk making them put me in charge as the CEO :D (Too much work and less time i dont't like ;) )

3)I like putting across the facts (supported by pics, videos shot by me :D )

4)I dont't ask for benefits when I am having the deadliest weapon - of saying 'NO' ;)

5)I have already said to my Boss (es) that I will be quiting next June and now they are tehinking twice everytime they see me on how to hold me here :D - a fact ;)

    6) I can call a donkey an ass but never a tiger :D

    7) How I wish for such treats :( Miser company :D

  20. I will say you said it yourself.. not all of them are like that.. there are good people and there are bad.. that holds true for every thing.. corporates too..

If you ask me.. I have seen, ethics do pay in long term. but then its just my opinion..

I think one should be sensible enough to see through the smiling faces and act as per the circumstances instead of getting biased with one's view.. if you will keep a negative POV when starting on some thing, then trust me only negative will happen.. so be positive yaar :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. thanks scorpio...bhelcome to my blog

quest as usual your answers made me LOL...I gotto learn the art of saying 'NO' frm u

  22. Tension mat le behen. The best tip I can give u is - climb the ladder soon. Then you can trample others and someone somewhere will wrtie such posts about you. ;) .They say a boss who is too well liked by his reportees is not an efficient boss.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Totally agree with you on points 1 & 2.And lemme give u a pat on the back for having the courage to say it out aloud ...

  24. nahi bhai...i don't think i would like to be a boss...what's the use, i anyways will have to report to some other idiot...i would prefer to be in the middle rung of the ladder :) but luckily my senior is a very nice man, so the bitterness sort of gets nullified

thanks manoranjini and keep visiting my blog
