Do you remember this dialogue from Rang De Basanti?? This movie was one of my all-time favorites. No, not because I am a die-hard fan of Aamir Khan or AR Rahman. It's just that the movie and especially this dialogue reminded me of what my daddy said years ago. He said: "beta, society is bad not because of the actions of bad people, it is bad because of the inactions of the good people'. I agree with him completely.
We often have this habit of cribbing. Yeh accha nahi hain...woh accha nahi hain....politicians are like this, bureaucrats are like that. I remember this incident...one of my aunt had come from UK to visit us, as she cribbed endlessly about how filthy our country is and how neat UK is; I noticed that the aunty was throwing choclate and biscuit wrapper on the roads. When I pointed out that she was dirtying the road, she casually said "arre, what's the big deal. Everyone does it naa". I just could not digest those words, I turned red, blue, green, yellow and all the primary and secondary colours available in the colour pallette and ran away from the spot. On one hand these people crib about how filthy and dirty our country is and on the other hand, these same people contribute towards making the place untidy.
Forget cleanliness, people do not even follow the traffic rules. Ab if you cross the road when the vehicles are moving, accident nahi hoga toh kya hoga. Above that, when the traffic police catches you, you get away by bribing him. Woh bhi happy, tum bhi happy.
Now whenever I take this topic, people try to hush me and tell me that I am ranting hopeless things and that we Indians can never improve. But I wish to disagree with them. Everybody has the scope for improvement. Valmiki the great was a rogue before he became a sage. You have to initiate the change. At the cost of sounding pompous, I wish to tell you something. I never throw wrappers and other stuffs on the road. Either I find a dustbin or if I find none in the vicinity, I carry it home and throw it in the dustbin. My friends used to tease me over this until one day, one of my friend got so accustomed to this weird habit of mine that she unconsciously started throwing things in the dustbin instead of throwing it on the road. That was the day when I really felt like a true winner.
So, the moral of the kahani is that if you wish to see a change in the society, initiate it. Don't wait for others to do something for you...desh will be perfect only if you make it perfect. And if you cannot do anything, then please stop cribbing.
Ok...aaj kaa lecture yahin khatam hota hain...Again will leave you with one of my most favorite songs from RDB. The RDB effect was so enormous that the public woke up from its slumber and saw to it that the Jessica Lall case gets solved soon.
So real... how many time have we seen those NRI's complaining about stuf in INDIA and doing exactly the same themselves. Be it anyone, i feel change comes only if you start changing yourself first. Its good that you followed the cleanliness and that got into a friend of yours. In a way you have actually done your job. Doing the right thing and making others do it, even if its one person. Its really worth appreciating :)
ReplyDeleteso herez a huge Congratssss!!! and keep up the gud work u r doin..
P.S: I cannot help but agree with the RDB's dialouge!! ( cant get over the movie even today!!)
cheers
rammy
Well, did you size up to your aunt and give her a good dashing of how much a hypocrite she is!??? Aunts, I tell you! Impossible creatures, and I'm sure the greatest intellect the world has ever seen, P.G Wodehouse agrees...
ReplyDeleteI practice what you have just preached as much as I can. India as a nation has to get out of cribbing mode into cleanup mode...Right now, I think we're waking up to that realization. At least I hope we are...

ReplyDelete@bullshee...i am happy that you follow what i have preached here. Aunty was double my size...i did not have enough strength to meet her up and bash her :)
@vinnie...thanks vinnie...and both the quotes were indeed meanignful. We just cannot wait for some leader to come and help us...we need to help ourselves.
Eggjactly!
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of sounding pompous, i also share the same 'wierd' habit of yours :)
You:"Aundiee, dont throw kachda on the road"
Aundie: "Aunty mat kaho naa!"
Gr8 song, reminded me of good times.
Keep the R&D coming GV! \m/
P.S. Mera pehla exam accha gaya. Now i can breathe a bit easier :)
Hmm correct.. Similarly, I switch off the lights whenever there is not need for them... I seriously believe that if everyone starts doing his/her job systematically there won't be any problem around at all..!
ReplyDeletei loved this..
ReplyDeleteinfact loved the movie

and the scene indeed
@D...sahi hain biddu...no egg-ajms is just too cool. I am also glad that u share the same weird habit of mine...so good to know that there are people who contribute towards the well-being of the country in their own little ways.
ReplyDelete@abhinav...i hope my dad does not come across your comment or else he will give me lect on that, i gotto learn this good habit from u. I always forget to switch off the lights and fans :(

Gayathri, I love this post. And as Vinnie quoted it "You must be the change you want to see in the world". It's very true.
ReplyDeleteI love you. :)
hi shruts...yes just as gandhiji said we need to be the change that we wish to see. How r u? been a long time since i spoke to you...miss u, rekha and mones a lot :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with u..If every1 stops cribbing and starts acting for a change..things will be soo much better.
ReplyDeleteI share ur habit of not littering the streets..but as i cant find a dustbin most of the times..i end up caryin all the litter home, in my bag. Quite embrssin at times when ppl open my bag and see choc and biscuit wrappers :P
P.S:
U surely have some patience..u actually went thru each of my posts...love u for that..thnks babe!!

ReplyDeleteI am doing good..We also miss you very much. Will meet soon..:)
ReplyDeleteIndia is more than capable of improving, if only we stop wasting our time on organising rallies and campaigns and start acting positively towards making India, a truly progressive nation. I do not care what a populist film like RDB portrayed. If we need films to show us the mirror, then god only can help us coz the makers of such films themselves do not care about the nation. For them, their publicity and their moolah is the priority.
ReplyDeletegary...we know that india is capable of improving and that politicians should focus on our well-being rather than campaigning and all that. But for a huge nation like india (which btw looks tiny in the world map) to function smoothly, there needs to be some amount of discipline and rules followed by the citizens. don't you think so?
ReplyDeleteAs for RDB being a populist film, I may agree with you...but then it certainly did make some amount of impact on many young minds. Remember the reservation issues and the jessica lall case naa.
@sharad, lead india campaign was very good. But I have not heard of it much this year. Anyways glad to know that we all think on similar lines
@ GAYA3..
ReplyDeleteSo dats exactly my point gaya3! Why are we Indians so defensive, paranoid and reactive in nature? If we require films such as RDB to wake us up on issues such as Jessica Lal murder case or the Reservation issue, then that means there is something wrong with us. We are used to being pampered and we are used to being fed with inspirational mediums to take a united front on a particular issue. Why cant we for a change be more proactive and take things in our own hands before the release of films like RDB? It took a massive carnage like 26/11 and more than 150 lives for us to protest against the system... if we wud have noticed the lapse in the system much before, the tragedy could have been averted.
"Koi bhi desh perfect nahi hota, use perfect banana padta hain... lekin perfect banane ke liye selfishness bhi tyagni padti hain... aur woh hum bharat wasi kabhi nahi karenge..."
Cannot agree more.
ReplyDeletethanks karthik, keep visiting!
ReplyDeletegary...hmm...i know we all need to become more proactive instead of being complacent. But atleast we as individuals should go on with our duties.
Hi Gayathri,
ReplyDeleteVery very thoughtful.
I have witnessed similar attitude.
Ashamed to say but sample this...
When people visit some other country, they stick to the rules, follow lane discipline, follow pedestrian crossing rules religiously. But when they get back, they return to one's own self.
Is that because everyone else does it, so they can get away with these acts?
Is that becuase there are no stricter laws and punishment?
Is that because the cops are not honest and are happy with a 50 bucks bribe?
Hope people's attitude change to make a better India
heres a stranger's share of eggs n' tamators!
ReplyDeleteliked the thoughtful post..maybe coz am addicted to the saying, "You must be the change you want to see in the world"
